This book presents analytical formulas which allow one to calculate the S-matrix for the acoustic and electromagnetic wave scattering by small bodies or arbitrary shapes with arbitrary accuracy. Equations for the self-consistent field in media consisting of many small bodies are derived. Applications of these results to ultrasound mammography and electrical engineering are considered. The above formulas are not available in the works of other authors. Their derivation is based on a mathematical theory for solving integral equations of electrostatics, magnetostatics, and other static fields. These equations are at a simple characteristic value. Convergent iterative processes are constructured for stable solution of these equations. The theory completes the classical work of Rayleigh on scattering by small bodies by providing analytical formulas for polarizability tensors for bodies of arbitrary shapes.

Electricity, Magnetism, Electromagnetic Waves by Wayne Saslow, ISBN 0126194556

A very comprehensive introduction to electricity, magnetism and optics ranging from the interesting and useful history of the science, to connections with current real-world phenomena in science, engineering and biology, to common sense advice and insight on the intuitive understanding of electrical and magnetic phenomena. This is a fun book to read, heavy on relevance, with practical examples, such as sections on motors and generators, as well as take-home experiments' to bring home the key concepts.
Slightly more advanced than standard freshman texts for calculus-based engineering physics courses with the mathematics worked out clearly and concisely. Helpful diagrams accompany the discussion. The emphasis is on intuitive physics, graphical visualization, and mathematical implementation. Solutions are available via website to qualified users.

Higher-Order Numerical Methods for Transient Wave Equations by Gary Cohen, ISBN 354041598X

Solving efficiently the wave equations involved in modeling acoustic, elastic or electromagnetic wave propagation remains a challenge both for research and industry. To attack the problems coming from the propagative character of the solution, the author constructs higher-order numerical methods to reduce the size of the meshes, and consequently the time and space stepping, dramatically improving storage and computing times. This book surveys higher-order finite difference methods and develops various mass-lumped finite (also called spectral) element methods for the transient wave equations, and presents the most efficient methods, respecting both accuracy and stability for each sort of problem. A central role is played by the notion of the dispersion relation for analyzing the methods. The last chapter is devoted to unbounded domains which are modeled using perfectly matched layer (PML) techniques. Numerical examples are given. Permanent Magnet and Electromechanical Devices: Materials, Analysis and Applications by Edward P. Furlani, ISBN 0122699513

The book provides both the theoretical and the applied background needed to predict magnetic fields. The theoretical presentation is reinforced with over 60 solved examples of practical engineering applications such as the design of magnetic components like solenoids, which are electromagnetic coils that are moved by electric currents and activate other devices such as circuit breakers. Other design applications would be for permanent magnet structures such as bearings and couplings, which are hardware mechanisms used to fashion a temporary connection between two wires.
This book is written for use as a text or reference by researchers, engineers, professors, and students engaged in the research, development, study, and manufacture of permanent magnets and electromechanical devices. It can serve as a primary or supplemental text for upper level courses in electrical engineering on electromagnetic theory, electronic and magnetic materials, and electromagnetic engineering. Chance in Biology: Using Probability to Explore Nature by Mark W. Denny, ISBN 0691094942

Life is a chancy proposition: from the movement of molecules to the age at which we die, chance plays a key role in the natural world. Traditionally, biologists have viewed the inevitable "noise" of life as an unfortunate complication. The authors of this book, however, treat random processes as a benefit. In this introduction to chance in biology, Mark Denny and Steven Gaines help readers to apply the probability theory needed to make sense of chance events--using examples from ocean waves to spiderwebs,...
